Chhattisgarh is a state that was newly formed from the
south-eastern under-developed region of Madhya Pradesh. The region
has varied geography, rich in mineral wealth with a population
representative of nearly all the communities in India, including the
most ancient tribes of India. However the lack of proper health care
infra-structure, including eye care in the entire region prompted
the need for a modern comprehensive eye care center. Advanced eye
care facilities available at various metropolitan cities in India
were too far both in terms of spirit and economics for the people.
These facilities were required to be brought here, nearer to the
care seekers. With this in mind, in 2004 MGM Eye Institute came into
being.
The principle guiding theme was to create world-class eye care
services which would be available to all irrespective of ones
socio-economic class. The focus would be on comprehensive patient
care, research, community eye care and education.
The development of proper eye health infra-structure in the form of
1,00,000 square feet of hospital building, equipped with the latest
state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipments was
coordinated with simultaneous manpower development. Young
professional ophthalmologists trained in various ophthalmic
subspecialties from L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad were
recruited to form the core. Along with them young graduates from
Chhattisgarh were trained in various aspects of eye care like
vision technicians, ophthalmic nursing, ophthalmic counseling, etc
were also trained at L V Prasad Eye Institute.
Over the past 5 years the Institute has seen over 1,00,000 patients and
operated close to 12,000. The mandate of the Institute warrants that
50 percent of its surgical services are provided free of cost to the
underprivileged and it has strived to fulfill this charter right
from the beginning. The phase wise development planned from the
outset was aimed to consolidate and expand. It has collaborated with
international organizations like ORBIS International to start
children eye care center from 2007 and on its own initiated the Low
Vision Center in 2009.
